TechCrunch reports that Apple has decided to wait until fall 2011 to launch their rumored iOS 5 for iOS devices: iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Major iOS upgrades are typically revealed by Apple during February or March then previewed again in early June alongside a new iPhone, then released on or around the new iPhone’s availability date. The report claims that 2011 will be different and that customers will likely only get their hands on the next-generation mobile operating system during the fall....

iOS 7.1 may have only been released this week, but it’s already got it’s own “gate”-worthy issue: battery life is abysmal. Reports on Twitter and Apple’s support discussion forums indicate that users are seeing significant drain on their batteries after installing the new update. [tweet https://twitter.com/horwitz/status/444305435265220608 align=’center’] Some users suggest that running a clean install of iOS 7.1 (by restoring through iTunes) will solve the issue. That solution seemed to help some people during the last round of BatteryGate back in 2011 when the iPhone 4S first launched, though there don’t seem to be any confirmed reports of that actually working yet....

People have been enjoying using Apple Pay. Apple Pay is Apple’s mobile payment system that allows you to pay for things in stores and through apps with different banks and credit cards. Using Apple Pay is more secure than swiping your credit or debit card because your card number, identity and CVV code are not visible to the merchant. Instead, with Apple Pay each card is assigned a unique Device Account Number that is encrypted and stored in the Secure Element, a dedicated chip in the device....

iOS 8 uses peer-to-peer technology to stream video to Apple TV, as described by Apple on a page highlighting enterprise features. Today, AirPlay requires both devices connect to the same WiFi network before they can communicate. With iOS 8, the network is cut out completely and the iOS device directly talks to the Apple TV with a peer-to-peer connection. AirDrop uses the same peer-to-peer technology, for convenience reasons. The peer-to-peer feature could come in handy in enterprise contexts, such as when doing a presentation in a meeting, as well as elsewhere....

According to our research, we also found that the A14X is based on the T8103, which is the codename for the Apple M1 chip used in the first Apple Silicon Macs. This corroborates a recent Bloomberg report that claims the next-generation iPad Pro will have “an updated processor that is on par with the faster M1 chip.” The fact that these references were found in iOS 14.5 are also a hint that the next generation iPad Pro is coming soon, as Apple would wait until iOS 15 to add support for the new chip if it was planned to arrive later this year....

We’ve covered Infuse a few times — a slick media player for iOS devices and as of late last year the new Apple TV. Today the apps are getting updates to version 4.2, bringing a handful of notable features to both the iOS and tvOS apps. It’s been a whole year since Instagram rolled out its Snapchat-cloned Stories feature that lets users share ephemeral photos and videos on the service, and today Instagram has shared new data on Stories changing user engagement. Earlier this summer Instagram shared that its Stories feature has 250 million users. Now Instagram says Stories has also helped increase the amount of time users spend in the app. Instagram doesn’t provide a year ago comparison but does call the new data an increase....

Update 2/17: 73% iOS 8 adoption measured on February 16th, up 1% since February 2nd. Change shows 1% moving from iOS 7 to iOS 8 with ‘Earlier’ remaining at 3%. Update 3/3: A month later, iOS 8 is now running on 3 out of 4 iOS devices according to Apple’s data. 75% of devices are now running iOS 8, with 22% still running iOS 7. Apple released a new count today for the percentage of iOS devices accessing the App Store and running iOS 8....

Instagram, following the controversial announcement that it would change the order in which images appear in user feeds, now appears to be testing a complete redesign of its app. Instagram has long stuck to the same classic design, but if this redesign rolls out to everyone, the app could finally move forward and fall into line with the design trends being adopted by many other apps. As you can see in the screenshots above, the new interface is very monochromatic and bland compared to the classic look of the app....

Instagram has announced that it is stepping up its anti-bullying efforts by using AI to detect signs of bullying in photos and captions … Instagram last year began using machine-learning to identify words and phrases in comments that might indicate bullying, and The Verge reports that the company is now aiming to do the same visually. The potential for social media to be used for bullying has prompted most platforms to create anti-bullying initiatives....

Intel today has announced early details of its future Ice Lake series of processors. Ice Lake is a successor to Intel’s Coffee Lake processors, which will be officially unveiled next week. The move to announce details about such a far out chip is abnormal for Intel. The company revealed the early information on its codename decoder. Intel has confirmed today that its Ice Lake series will be based on the 10nm+ architecture....

In iOS 13, integrated into the Apple Maps app on your iPhone, you can you share your journey status with personal contacts in a feature called Share ETA. The recipient receives the address of your destination and your expected arrival time. What’s really cool about this feature is that the estimated time of arrival (ETA) will update automatically, so you can see if they hit traffic or otherwise get delayed....

Find My iPhone was first released in June 2010 initially for the iPhone. Now, Find My iPhone allows you to track the location of your device, be it an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, in case it gets lost or stolen. This is a great benefit because when you locate your device using Find My iPhone, the device makes noise until it is found and will show you were it is located using Apple Maps....

Besides a new suite of enhancements for educational uses, Apple’s upcoming iOS 9.3 release, which went into beta this morning, adds several consumer-facing features.
