With the launch of iOS 8.4 earlier this summer, Apple removed support for Home Sharing, prompting the users to voice their dissatisfaction with the company’s decision. Eddy Cue then revealed that Home Sharing support would return with iOS 9, and sure enough, it did. The process for using it is similar to what it has always been, but let’s go through the steps… When connected to the same Wi-Fi network and using the same Apple ID, Home Sharing allows you to view and play the iTunes Library that’s located on a computer or stored on an external hard drive, on other computers or iOS devices....

Interesting breakdown over at Asymco. It appears that while it still over one third of all iOS devices sold, the iPod touch is trending down overall as the iPad is pulling in a bigger percentage and the iPhone continues to break into more markets with more carriers. It always bothered me that Apple put iPod touch numbers in with other iPods when it clearly belongs in the same category as the iPhone....

Instagram is rolling out an update today for its iPhone app bringing two major new features, including a redesigned Explore tab and improved search functionality. The company said the updates will “help connect our community to the world as it happens,” or in other words, a more real-time experience thanks to new trending Tags and Places within the Explore tab. With more than 70 million photos and videos posted to Instagram every day, wherever something is happening, chances are you can see it here....

Apple is today releasing iOS 11.4, which finally includes AirPlay 2. This will bring multi-room and stereo pairing to the HomePod and Apple TV, calendar personal requests to HomePod Siri, alongside many other features. The HomePod will also be debuting in several new countries next month; HomePod launches in Canada, France, and Germany on June 18 (via Buzzfeed). AirPlay 2 enables users to add compatible speakers to the Home app, and integrate with other AirPlay 2 speakers....

iOS 14.2 beta 2 is now available to developers, and the update includes a handful of new emoji characters for users. As first reported by Emojipedia, the new emoji options in iOS 14.2 beta 2 include bubble tea, a transgender flag, seal, feather, and more. These emoji were approved earlier this year as part of the Emoji 13.0 release by the Unicode Consortium. Apple first previewed its custom designs for the emoji back in July, and today’s release of iOS 14....

iOS 14.3 beta includes a new hidden section in the Find My app with the codename “Hawkeye,” which is intended not only for AirTags but also for third-party tracking accessories such as Tile, as promised by Apple at WWDC 2020. The Find My app will guide users to set up their tracking tags and then place them in bags, suitcases, key chains, and other objects to then track them through the Find My network....

iOS 12 brings many subtle refinements that may have flown under your radar. One of these new features is the ability to receive notifications quietly. On the first iOS 12.2 developer beta, we found evidence of a new generation of AirPods with voice-activated Hey Siri, the Apple News Premium subscription service, new iPads and iPod touch that could be released with this update, and many other changes and improvements....

This is what iOS 15.3 was like. It was better than iOS 15.2 but worse than iOS 15.2.1. So, when Apple pushed out iOS 15.3.1, I installed it rather gingerly. Because this contained a security patch for a serious and actively exploited vulnerability, it’s not like I had much of a choice but to install it (unless I was feeling lucky, which I wasn’t, to be honest). The release notes mention a fix for a security vulnerability and an issue with Braille displays, so I wasn’t hopeful of any other fixes....

Instagram today quietly announced that it is rolling out an update to its iOS app that improves support for the sharper iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus cameras and adds Live Photo support. Instagram’s co-founder Mike Krieger made the announcement on Twitter earlier this afternoon (via TechCrunch). Both of these new features were originally teased by the company back at the iPhone 7 unveiling event in September, but they’re now rolling out to everyone....

The popular Intuit-owned Mint finance management app updated to version 4.1 today adding new bill reminder features, more accessibility support, and general improvements all around. Highlighted in the new version is the ability to manage bill reminders right from the app. For the iPhone version, bill reminders can be created, edited, and managed from the latest version of the app. A change to the Overview tab wraps all this together....
