Earlier this year, Intel announced that it was leaving the smartphone modem business due to profitability concerns. Now, the company is set to auction off its portfolio of patents and IP related to smartphone modem technologies. IAM reports that Intel is looking to divest around 8,500 assets from its patent portfolio. The auction will consist of two primary parts, including Intel’s cellular portfolio and its connected device portfolio: What’s important to note here is that this auction is different than Intel’s attempts to sell its modem business, though it’s possible that one buyer could purchase both....

Apple is widely rumored to be dropping the 3.5 mm headphone jack from the iPhone 7, instead favouring wireless Bluetooth or the Lightning port for connecting headphones. Intel is also keen to eliminate the 100 year old 3.5 mm jack, citing ‘industry singling a strong desire to move from analog to digital’ (via AnandTech). However, Intel is pushing USB-C as the future of headphone audio cables. Intel believes USB-C will win out over 3....

Intruders: Hide and Seek may be basic and straightforward in its approach, but it’s an enjoyable horror gaming experience with VR functionality. Horror games have generally translated well into a VR setting and have represented a significant percentage oft he earliest tech demos and game experiences. Adopters have been treated to VR functionality in games like Resident Evil 7, while the future looks bright with other high-profile titles like The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners....

However, Apple found a bug in iOS 15 that enabled the setting for some users who had previously opted out. In other words, recordings were being kept for some users who had opted out of the setting instead of being deleted. Apple has since deleted the erroneous recordings. Once Apple discovered the bug, the company turned off the setting for “many” Siri users with the release of iOS 15.2. The same update also fixed the bug....

One interesting feature of iOS 5 that we’ve been tracking since yesterday is that users have been reporting the above ‘unsecured call’ warning. While it isn’t in any of the documentation we’ve seen, it appears that Apple is warning users of the possibility that their phone calls can be eavesdropped on. It likely warning of the possibility of a GSM IMSI Catcher basestation which can intercept unecrypted calls. Wikipedia notes that unecrypted call detection isn’t new:...

According to BGR, Apple will release the seventh and final beta version of iOS 7 to developers today. The release, like most of the past seeds, is said to arrive around 1 PM EST/10 AM PST. This new build is said to include a “much higher” build number than previous releases, and this typically means that many under-the-hood changes could have occurred between previous betas and this new beta. BGR, which previously reported that iOS 7 beta 6 would arrive this week, notes that the mix-up in information is unsurprisingly due to the iOS 7 beta 6 quick-fix for iTunes in the Cloud last week....

In earlier versions of iOS, the system would notify users of available App Store updates with a badge on the icon (seen above). You had to open up the App Store, press the Update button, then press Update All. It was rather annoying to keep up with all the apps that needed updating. Sometimes by the time you finished updating, more apps would need updating. Now with iOS 7, the apps will now automatically update....

Instagram is making a small but notable change to how it handles autoplaying videos. While the app has always autoplayed videos as you scroll through your feed, sound would be muted until you tap on the video. Now, Instagram is slightly changing up how sound is handled with videos… Now, if you tap on one video to play the sound, all future videos will play with sound. This resets every time you close and open the app, but it saves you from having to repeatedly tap on videos to hear sound....

Update: Guilherme Rambo has found additional evidence of Instagram’s video calling feature: Instagram appears to be preparing to compete with one of Snapchat’s most popular features. Happy beta release day — iOS 12 developer beta 5 is out now. iOS 12 is getting closer to being complete with release expected around early September, so we’ll dig in and see if anything has changed in the new version. iOS 12 includes several significant changes for iPhone and iPad including performance improvements, especially on older devices; ARKit 2.0 with shared experiences; refined search and sharing in Photos; more Siri access in third-party apps and Siri Shortcuts based on Workflow; updates to Stocks, Voice Memos, Apple Books, and Apple News; use management features including updates to Do Not Disturb, more manageable notifications, and Screen Time parental controls; Memoji in Messages; FaceTime between up to 32 users; and much more....

The iOS update train is still chugging along. After releasing not one but two iOS 12 developer betas last week, we expect Apple to release iOS 12 developer beta 9 for iPhone and iPad today. Apple released beta 7 on Monday but pulled the update later in the day due to performance issues that were later resolved in beta 8. Apple also revealed through the pulled beta version that Group FaceTime won’t be shipping time for iOS 12’s general release — likely early next month — and instead will take a little more time....

In addition to the hidden panorama mode, iOS 5 hides another secret feature: an Android-like autocorrect keyboard bar. Update: Apple has resolved the problem overnight. Downloading apps now also loads the embedded extensions successfully, just in time for iOS 8’s public debut … With iOS 8 set to launch tomorrow, Apple is well underway approving apps and app updates that incorporate the new features of iOS 8. Apps that require iOS 8 are currently ‘Pending An Apple Release’, but apps that support earlier versions are beginning to show up in the store....

A report from VR-Zone (via Engadget) claimed to show Intel’s plans for its fourth-generation Haswell processors. These are expected to be released in the second quarter of next year and are the likely follow-up to Ivy Bridge for Apple’s next round of Mac refreshes (unless Apple switches to AMD, ARM, or something). Previous leaks showed Intel plans to release the Haswell processors between March and June 2013, and today’s leak, if accurate, gives us a look at all 14 new desktop CPUs expected in the Haswell launch....

AT&T has started to roll out an update to some iPhone and iPad users running the latest iOS 12.2 beta 2 update that changes their LTE service icon to “5G E,” short for 5G Evolution. Yet another feature hidden within iOS 4.3 seemingly hidden within the plethora of reports on the future update yesterday comes the ‘Find My Friends’ tag, a new facility which suggests the ability to find iOS-using friends kept within your MobileMe address book. Hidden inside the Settings App this suggests Apple may seek to offer location-based friend-finding facilities in future products.
