Instagram is making its Stories more accessible with a new auto-caption feature that’s starting to roll out to users. The new feature comes with multiple font styles to pick from. Shown off on Twitter by Matt Navarra (via Engadget), the new auto-caption feature for Stories comes via a sticker labeled “CC Captions.” This will certainly be a welcome addition particularly for those who are hard of hearing. But it can also come in handy for all users in scenarios when you can’t use audio....

Update: Instagram says the outage has been resolved. “We’re back! The issue has been resolved and we should be back at 100% for everyone. We’re sorry for any inconvenience,” it says. Instagram has confirmed this morning that some users are currently unable to send or upload photos and videos. iOS 9 continues to outstrip all previous versions of iOS in terms of pace of adoption. Apple has updated its developer site to show that 66% of all iOS devices are now running iOS 9, up from 61% less than a fortnight ago. For comparison, iOS 8 had only hit 60% by the end of November last year, took until late December to get to 64% and January to reach 68%....

A report this morning from Reuters shares that T-Mobile is “close to agreeing tentative terms” for a merger deal with Sprint after months of talks. News of a T-Mobile and Sprint merger have been floating around since May. The details of this year’s merger would give T-Mobile’s parent company, Deutsche Telekom a majority stake (T-Mobile is now the #3 carrier, followed by Sprint). Back in 2014, Sprint was looking at acquiring T-Mobile, but abandoned those plans....

Instagram’s IGTV spin-off hasn’t yet gained widespread adoption, especially through the standalone IGTV app itself. In an effort to change that, Instagram is rolling out a redesigned interface for IGTV with a new focus on promoting creators who are making long-form content. Instagram told The Verge that it has completely redesigned the homepage in the IGTV app to help promote individual creators. When a user first opens the IGTV app, they’ll now see a “popular creator” at the top, tailored to each user “based on who they follow and whose content the app thinks might be interesting to them....

Instagram has started to roll out a mute feature to its users starting today. While many may feel like the feature has been a long time coming, it’s great to see an alternative to unfollowing. Detailed in a blog post, Instagram says the new mute feature “will be rolling out over the coming weeks” and will offer the option to “Mute Posts” or “Mute Posts and Story”. There’s a new App Privacy Report included in the update that shows how which apps are accessing your private data and how often that access is happening. For example, I can see that the Invoxia GPS app accessed my location 51 seconds ago, along with a long list of apps below it that access other parts of my private data. Another example is that the Mail app accessed my contacts six seconds ago, even though I wasn’t actively using the app....
