Instagram this evening is alerting users that it has suffered a security breach exposing the contact information of “high-profile” users. The news of this hack comes just days after celebrity Selena Gomez had her account comprised, but it’s unclear if the two events are related. Instagram says the breach has revealed the email addresses and phone numbers associated with each account, but passwords were not exposed. The social network attributes the hack to someone exploiting a bug in an Instagram API....

Universal has released a Super Bowl 2020 TV spot for The Invisible Man. After multiple failed attempts to reboot its classic monster movie universe, the studio has decided to take it one film at a time, instead. Up first is The Invisible Man, a loose re-imagining of the 1933 sci-fi horror film and the 1897 H.G. Wells novel that inspired it. Apple has released iOS 11.2.1 for iPhone and iPad. The software update restores remote access in HomeKit for shared users which was temporarily disabled last week to address a vulnerability in Apple’s smart home framework that allowed unauthorized access in certain circumstances. Apple has also released tvOS 11.2.1 which is likely related to the fix. Apple promptly resolved the issue server side so HomeKit users needed to take no action to ensure security....

As indicated by the chart above, just released iOS 5 is showing many speed improvements over iOS 4. iOS 5 was faster in almost every category — as indicated by green — except for the first generation iPad. The chart was put together by GigaOM using GeekBench, Gague, BenchTest, and SunSpider, comparing many later versions of iOS 4 to iOS 5. In an effort to boost usage of its new streaming music service that launched alongside iOS 7 last fall, Apple is considering changes to iTunes Radio. The Cupertino company is now testing iTunes Radio as a standalone application with iOS 8, according to sources briefed on the plans. iTunes Radio first arrived as a feature within the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch operating system’s Music application. As a tab in the already-existing Music app, iTunes Radio has not received a promoted presence on iOS, and this likely has deterred growth for the service in terms of advertising revenue and usage…...

Apple earlier today reported its Q3 2015 earnings, and while the company’s stock has taken an after-hours dive, the numbers were generally strong. Apple reported that it had sold 47 million iPhone units and 10.9 million iPad units in the quarter, combining for a total of 57.9 million iOS devices, not including the iPod touch. As noted by Benedict Evans of a16z, Apple’s sales last quarter mean that iOS sales are now matching those of Windows PCs....

Apple’s radically new set of default icons is probably the biggest point of contention surrounding iOS 7. Each new icon has been redrawn and features a new color palette that fits to a new design grid. Nearly three weeks after the release of iOS 13 to the public, Instagram for iOS has been updated with Dark Mode support. The new design is a mix of dark gray and black, and matches the system-wide setting in iOS 13. Instagram is rolling out a new Snapchat-like AR feature today called face filters. These work with both the photo and video camera to apply real-time face-tracking filters over subjects. The iCade is an attachable accessory for the Apple iPad that functions as a portable arcade cabinet, but now the device’s manufacturer unveiled three new products under the popular line that toggle the iPhone and iPod Touch.
